The transition from the Neolithic period (the agricultural Stone Age) to the Early Harappan phase in the Ghaggar-Hakra basin is frequently depicted as a sharp technological leap. Standard narratives often present the sudden appearance of wheel-thrown, red-slipped pottery as a clean break from older, hand-fashioned ceramic traditions. However, a closer look at the stratigraphy (the study of rock and soil layers) and ceramic fabric (the physical composition of clay and its inclusions) at the site of Kunal in Haryana suggests a different story.

Excavations conducted by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and the Haryana State Department of Archaeology and Museums have revealed a long, continuous sequence of occupation. The lowest levels at Kunal, designated as Phase I, feature subterranean pit-dwellings. These early levels yield a hand-made red ware that coexists with emerging wheel-made varieties. Rather than representing an abrupt cultural replacement, the microscopic details of this pottery point to a deep technological continuity stretching back to earlier Neolithic traditions.

The Microscopic Evidence of Temper

In archaeological ceramics, the choice of temper—non-plastic material added to raw clay to prevent shrinkage and cracking during drying and firing—acts as a cultural footprint. While later Harappan potters favored mineral tempers like sand, mica, or crushed pottery grog, the earliest pottery builders at Kunal relied heavily on organic materials.

Thin-section petrography (the microscopic examination of sliced ceramic samples) of the Kunal Phase I red ware reveals extensive carbonaceous voids. These microscopic cavities are the distinct signatures of burnt-out organic matter, specifically rice husks and chaff. The potters mixed agricultural by-products directly into the clay matrix.

This organic-tempering technique is identical to the ceramic fabric recipes documented in the Neolithic levels of nearby sites in the Indo-Gangetic plains, such as Lahuradewa and Bhirrana. The preservation of this specific recipe into the Early Harappan sequence at Kunal indicates that the fundamental domestic knowledge of clay preparation did not vanish with the arrival of the potter's wheel. Instead, local communities adapted their existing raw-material recipes to the new forming technologies.

Stratigraphy and the Myth of Abrupt Transition

The developmental sequence at Kunal is divided into three primary phases: Phase I (divided into I-A and I-B), Phase II, and Phase III. In the earliest sub-phase, Phase I-A, residents lived in round pits dug into the natural soil, plastering the walls with local clay. The pottery associated with these pit-dwellings consists of a dull, thick red ware, alongside a highly distinctive bi-chrome ware painted with white and black pigments over a red slip (a liquid clay coating).

Scholars debating the origins of the Harappan civilization often focus on the rapid emergence of standardized regional styles, such as the Kot Diji style. However, the stratigraphy of Kunal shows that the transition from pit-dwellings to above-ground mud-brick houses (Phase I-B and Phase II) occurred without any occupational break or destruction layers.

Reports published in Puratattva (the bulletin of the Indian Archaeological Society) and Man and Environment outline how the organic-tempered hand-made pottery gradually declined in percentage rather than disappearing overnight. Over successive structural phases, mineral tempers slowly replaced organic binders. This slow, generation-by-generation shift in paste preparation suggests that local potting lineages were actively experimenting with raw materials to suit the higher firing temperatures demanded by emerging kiln technologies.

Regional Variations in the Ghaggar-Hakra Basin

The persistence of organic-tempered pottery at Kunal highlights a broader pattern of regional diversity that challenges uniform models of Harappan urbanization. In the dry, arid tracts of Cholistan along the dry bed of the Hakra River, early ceramic assemblages show a rapid adoption of sand-tempered, wheel-made wares. In contrast, the wetter, eastern plains of Haryana and Punjab retained organic-tempering traditions for a much longer duration.

This geographical variation suggests that early agriculturalists in the eastern plains had an abundant supply of crop processing waste, such as rice husk, which they naturally integrated into their domestic craft production. The reliance on rice-husk temper also provides direct, physical evidence of early rice cultivation in the region, supporting the botanical findings of early agricultural trials in the Ghaggar-Hakra divide.

Rethinking Cultural Replacement

Historically, early Indian archaeology relied on diffusionist models, where any major technological upgrade was explained by the arrival of new people or external influences. The continuity of the ceramic fabric at Kunal offers a corrective to this view. The physical artifacts show that the people who dug the Neolithic pit-dwellings were the very same people who gradually built the brick houses of the Mature Harappan period.

By focusing on the mundane, microscopic details of clay preparation rather than spectacular decorative motifs, researchers can trace the quiet persistence of ancient domestic habits. The rice-husk temper of Kunal serves as a silent witness to a slow, indigenous evolution, proving that the foundations of India’s earliest cities were built on local Neolithic innovations.
