For decades, archaeologists have sought to understand the Sothi-Siswal culture, a regional tradition that preceded and eventually merged into the Mature Harappan phase. Unlike the rapid urbanization models of the past, contemporary excavation reports reveal a nuanced, gradual process of cultural transition visible in the soil.
The Sothi-Siswal culture is defined primarily by its ceramic assemblage. These wares feature distinct incised designs and a particular red-slipped pottery style. As noted by V.N. Misra and R.S. Here, the stratigraphy shows a continuity of habitation where the older ceramic forms do not disappear instantly; they linger, blending with the emerging Harappan aesthetic. A perennial challenge in the Ghaggar-Hakra plain is the nature of the soil itself. These sites are often prone to vertical displacement due to rodent activity, water table fluctuations, and subsequent historical occupation. Scholars debate the exact pace of this transformation. Some, looking at the rapid changes in city layouts, suggest a sudden administrative shift.
