Following the Dye: Madder, Indigo, and the Hidden Trade Routes of Early Indian Cloth
Traces of madder and indigo on ancient Indian textiles reveal old networks of farmers, dyers, and traders — and how much of that supply chain still stays invisible to archaeology.

A single scrap of cotton, no bigger than a coin, sat in a museum drawer for decades before anyone thought to ask what colored it. When conservators finally tested a fragment of dyed cotton from Mohenjo-daro, the Bronze Age city on the Indus in present-day Pakistan, they found traces consistent with mordant-dyed madder — a red dye made from the root of plants in the Rubia genus, commonly called Indian madder (a plant used across South Asia to make red dye). That cloth is often cited as one of the oldest surviving examples of a dyeing technique that required not just a plant, but a whole supply chain: a mordant (a metal salt that binds dye permanently to fiber), a dye plant grown somewhere else, and someone who knew how to combine them without ruining the cloth.
That is the quiet argument at the center of any dye story: color is never local. A red or blue thread is a small, wearable map of who talked to whom.
What the Chemistry Actually Shows
Madder dyeing needs alum or another mordant to fix the color permanently to cotton or wool fiber. Alum does not occur everywhere, and neither does Rubia. The plant favored for dye — often identified in South Asian contexts as Indian madder, Rubia cordifolia — grows across a wide range in the subcontinent, from the Himalayan foothills down into peninsular India, which makes pinning down a single point of origin for any particular dye job difficult. That is one honest limit of this evidence: chemical analysis can often tell you what dye compound is present — alizarin and purpurin are the marker molecules for madder — but it usually cannot tell you which valley the root came from, unless the archaeological context does that work instead.
Indigo tells a similar but distinct story. The blue dye comes from species in the genus Indigofera, and India's association with the dye runs deep enough that the word "indigo" itself descends from the Greek indikon, meaning "Indian substance" — a name given by people who were importing it, not growing it, which is its own small clue about ancient trade direction. Roman writers described indigo arriving from India as a valued, exotic pigment, evidence that by the early centuries CE a finished dye product, not just raw cloth, was moving west along maritime and overland routes.
Ports, Not Just Farms
Indigo and madder did not simply grow, get harvested, and disappear into local looms. They moved. The Red Sea port of Berenike, excavated over decades, has produced cargo evidence — pepper, textiles, and other goods — confirming it as a hub in Indian Ocean trade linking Egypt, Arabia, and Indian coasts in the Roman period. Teams working at Berenike have published findings on the site's role in this network, part of a larger picture in which Indian textiles, and the dyes fixed into them, were export goods, not just domestic necessities.
The Periplus of the Erythraean Sea, a Greek merchant's guide to Indian Ocean trade written roughly in the first century CE, lists specific Indian ports and the goods that moved through them, including cotton cloth of varying grades and colors. It is a text scholars treat as a practical trade manual rather than literature, and it gives historians something rarer than pot sherds: a contemporary voice naming what was actually being bought and sold, port by port.
Cotton Needed a Country Behind It
None of this dye evidence means much without the fiber it was fixed to. Cotton domestication and early cultivation in South Asia has been studied through archaeobotany — the recovery and identification of ancient plant remains — at sites across the Indus region, where cotton seeds and textile impressions on pottery and metal objects have been recovered from Harappan-era layers. Cotton cultivation, dye-plant cultivation, mordant sourcing, spinning, weaving, and dyeing were separate specialized activities, most likely carried out in different places by different hands, before the finished cloth ever reached a port like Berenike or a market described in the Periplus.
What Remains Genuinely Uncertain
It is tempting to draw a clean line from a dyed thread to a named kingdom or a specific trade route on a map. The evidence resists that. Dye-plant identification from residue analysis is a relatively young field, sample sizes from ancient sites are small, and many older museum textiles were never tested with modern methods before conservation treatments altered their chemistry. Scholars debate how much weight to put on isolated finds like the Mohenjo-daro fragment versus building a fuller picture only possible with more systematic testing across many sites and periods.
What can be said, carefully: chemical and textual evidence together show that by the Roman period, Indian dyed textiles were an established export, that indigo was recognized abroad specifically as an Indian product, and that ports on both the Red Sea and Indian coasts were built around this and other trade in the Indian Ocean world. The rest — the exact farms, the exact traders, the exact days a dyer's hands turned a fiber blue — stays in the ground, waiting for someone with a better test.
