Āyus and the Actuary: Two Grammars for Measuring a Human Life

Long before colonial insurers built mortality tables, Ayurvedic texts had their own arithmetic for a lifespan. A close read of āyus (vital duration) against actuarial logic shows two incompatible ways of counting the same unknown.

A life, in the actuary's ledger, is a row of numbers: age at entry, probability of death this year, premium adjusted accordingly. A life, in the Caraka Samhita (चरकसंहिता, a foundational Ayurvedic medical text traditionally dated to the early centuries CE), is something else — a quantity called āyus (आयुस्, "lifespan" or "vital duration"), and it does not behave like an actuarial variable at all. The two systems were built centuries and a continent apart to answer what looks like the same question — how long will this person live? — and they answer it in ways that cannot be translated into each other without losing something.

This matters because the SAGE article this piece responds to describes how colonial-era life insurers built actuarial tables to price an unknown lifespan into a saleable premium. That is one grammar for turning a life into a number. Ayurveda had already built another, and it is worth reading closely rather than folding into the first.

What āyus actually means in the Sanskrit

Start with the word itself. Āyus is not simply "age" (vayas, वयस्) or "years lived." Classical Ayurvedic texts distinguish the two. Vayas is a count — how many years have passed. Āyus is closer to "vital duration" or "the span of embodied life," a quantity that includes the years but is not reducible to them. The opening chapters of the Caraka Samhita's Sutrasthana (सूत्रस्थान, the foundational section on principles) define ayurveda itself — the discipline, not just the word — as the knowledge (veda) of āyus: what sustains it, what depletes it, what is wholesome (hita) and unwholesome (ahita) for it. The text treats hitāhitam āyuḥ (हितायुः, literally "beneficial-or-harmful lifespan") as a single compound problem, not two separate ledgers of good and bad years.

This is a philological point with real consequences. If āyus were just years-remaining, an actuary's table and Caraka's classification would be doing the same job in different notation. They are not. Caraka's text treats āyus as a compound variable shaped simultaneously by prakṛti (प्रकृति, constitution — the body's inherited disposition among the three doṣas, or humors), by ācāra (आचार, conduct — diet, sleep, sexual restraint, daily and seasonal regimen), and by deśa-kāla (देशकाल, "place and time" — the season and region a person lives in, since Ayurvedic physiology treats climate as continuously acting on the body). None of these are treated as independent risk factors to be weighted and summed. They are treated as conditions that interact, sometimes canceling each other, sometimes compounding — a good constitution can be undone by bad conduct, a modest constitution preserved by disciplined conduct matched to the season. The text is explicit that this is a dynamic, adjustable state, not a fixed allotment.

The actuary's very different unit

An actuarial table, by contrast, needs āyus-as-vayas — years, counted, aggregated across many people, so that a probability of death at each age can be estimated from the pattern of a population rather than the constitution of an individual. The whole apparatus depends on this substitution: it cannot ask what a person's doṣas are, or whether they observed a proper dinacaryā (दिनचर्या, daily regimen); it can only ask how old they are, and sometimes what they do for a living or where they live, and infer mortality risk from the statistical behavior of others in that same bucket. The SAGE piece traces how colonial insurers built this machinery — an apparatus for turning individually unknowable deaths into a collectively predictable and thus priceable rate. That is a genuine intellectual achievement, but it is a different achievement from what Caraka's text is attempting, and it solves a different problem: population-level pricing risk, not individual-level regimen and prognosis.

Where the two frameworks actually meet — and where they don't

There is a real point of contact, and it should not be inflated into more than it is. Both systems treat lifespan as something other than fixed fate — both reject a purely fatalistic view in favor of a model where measurable inputs (constitution and conduct on one side, age and demographic category on the other) predict an outcome. That structural resemblance — inputs, prediction, an implied intervention — is genuine and worth noting.

But scholars working on the history of Ayurvedic prognosis have long debated how far Caraka's classificatory scheme was meant to function predictively for an individual versus descriptively, as a framework for diagnosis and regimen-prescription rather than forecasting. That debate is unresolved and should be treated as such — tradition holds one reading, contemporary scholarship offers competing ones, and the text itself does not settle it. What can be said with more confidence, from the text alone, is this: Caraka's āyus is a compound, qualitative, individually-adjustable state. The actuary's āyus is a quantitative, population-level average. Calling them "two ways of measuring the same thing" is true only if "measuring" is stretched thin enough to blur what each system actually claims to know.

The temptation, faced with two old systems for the same modern anxiety, is to declare one an anticipation of the other — to make Caraka a proto-actuary. The texts do not support that reading. They support something more interesting: two disciplines, arriving from opposite directions, that never once agree on what a "number for a life" should even count.
